SUMMARY:SAINT HENRY II\, the PIUS Emperor
DESCRIPTION:Henry\, Duke of Bavaria\, saw in a vision his guardian\, St. Wolfgang\, pointing to the words “after six.” This moved him to prepare for death\, and for six years he continued to watch and pray\, when\, at the end of the sixth year\, he found the warning verified in his election as emperor. Thus trained in the fear of God\, he ascended the throne with but one thought-to reign for His greater glory. \nThe pagan Slavs were then despoiling the empire. Henry attacked them with a small force; but angels and Saints were seen leading his troops\, and the heathen fled in despair. Poland and Bohemia\, Moravia and Burgundy\, were in turn annexed to his kingdom\, Pannonia and Hungary won to the Church. With the Faith secured in Germany\, Henry passed into Italy\, drove out the Antipope Gregory\, brought Benedict VIII back to Rome\, and was crowned in St. Peter’s by that Pontiff\, in 1014. \nIt was Henry’s custom\, on arriving in any town\, to spend his first night in watching in some church dedicated to our blessed Lady. As he was thus praying in St. Mary Major’s\, the first night of his arrival in Rome\, he “saw the Sovereign and Eternal Priest Christ Jesus” enter to say Mass. Sts. Laurence and Vincent assisted as deacon and sub-deacon. Saints innumerable filled the church\, and angels sang in the choir. After the Gospel\, an angel was sent by Our Lady to give Henry the book to kiss. Touching him lightly on the thigh\, as the angel did to Jacob\, he said\, “Accept this sign of God’s love for your chastity and justice;” and from that time the emperor always was lame. \nLike holy David\, Henry employed the fruits of his conquests in the service of the temple. The forests and mines of the empire\, the best that his treasury could produce\, were consecrated to the sanctuary. Stately cathedrals\, noble monasteries\, churches innumerable\, enlightened and sanctified the once heathen lands. \nIn 1022 Henry lay on his bed of death. He gave back to her parents his wife\, St. Cunegunda\, “a virgin still\, as a virgin he had received her from Christ\,” and surrendered his own pure soul to God. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:ST. JOHN GUALBERT Abbot
DESCRIPTION:St. John Gualbert was born at Florence\, A. D. 999. Following the profession of arms at that troubled period\, he became involved in a blood-feud with a near relative. One Good Friday\, as he was riding into Florence accompanied by armed men\, he encountered his enemy in a place where neither could avoid the other. John would have slain him; but his adversary\, who was totally unprepared to fight\, fell upon his knees with his arms stretched out in the form of a cross\, and implored him\, for the sake of Our Lord’s holy Passion\, to spare his life. St. John said to his enemy\, “I cannot refuse what you ask in Christ’s name. I grant you your life\, and I give you my friendship. Pray that God may forgive me my sin.” Grace triumphed. \nA humble and changed man\, he entered the Church of St. Miniato\, which was near; and whilst he prayed\, the figure of our crucified Lord\, before which he was kneeling\, bowed its head toward him as if to ratify his pardon. Abandoning the world\, he gave himself up to prayer and penance in the Benedictine Order. \nLater he was led to found the congregation called of Vallombrosa\, from the shady valley a few miles from Florence\, where he established his first monastery. Once the enemies of the Saint came to his convent of St. Salvi\, plundered it\, and set fire to it\, and having treated the monks with ignominy\, beat them and wounded them. St. John rejoiced. “Now\,” he said\, “you are true monks. Would that I myself had had the honor of being with you when the soldiers came\, that I might have had a share in the glory of your crowns! ” \nHe fought manfully against simony\, and in many ways promoted the interest of the Faith in Italy. After a life of great austerity\, he died whilst the angels were singing round his bed\, on July 11th\, 1073. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:SAINT BENEDICT Abbot
DESCRIPTION:St. Benedict\, blessed by grace and in name\, was born of a noble Italian family about 480. When a boy he was sent to Rome\, and there placed in the public schools. Scared by the licentiousness of the Roman youth\, he fled to the desert mountains of Subiaco\, and was directed by the Holy Spirit into a cave\, deep\, craggy\, and almost inaccessible. He lived there for three years\, unknown to any one save the holy monk Romanus\, who clothed him with the monastic habit and brought him food. But the fame of his sanctity soon gathered disciples round him. The rigor of his rule\, however\, drew on him the hatred of some of the monks\, and one of them mixed poison with the abbot’s drink; but when the Saint made the sign of the cross on the poisoned bowl\, it broke and fell in pieces to the ground. \nAfter he had built twelve monasteries at Subiaco\, he removed to Monte Casino\, where he founded an abbey in which he wrote his rule and lived until death. By prayer he did all things: wrought miracles\, saw visions\, and prophesied. A peasant\, whose boy had just died\, ran in anguish to St. Benedict\, crying out\, “Give me back my son!” The monks joined the poor man in his entreaties; but the Saint replied\, “Such miracles are not for us to work\, but for the blessed apostles. Why will you lay upon me a burden which my weakness cannot bear? ” Moved at length by compassion he knelt down and\, prostrating himself upon the body of the child\, prayed earnestly. Then rising\, he cried out\, “Behold not\, O Lord\, my sins\, but the faith of this man\, who desires the life of his son\, and restore to the body that soul which you have taken away.” Hardly had he spoken when the child’s body began to tremble\, and taking it by the hand he restored it alive to its father. \nSix days before his death he ordered his grave to be opened\, and fell ill of a fever. On the sixth day he requested to be borne into the chapel\, and\, having received the body and blood of Christ\, with hands uplifted\, and leaning on one of his disciples\, he calmly expired in prayer on the 21st of March\, 547. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:THE SEVEN HOLY BROTHERS & ST. FELICITAS
DESCRIPTION:The illustrious martyrdom of these Saints happened at Rome\, under the Emperor Antoninus. The seven brothers were the sons of St. Felicitas\, a noble\, pious\, Christian widow in Rome\, who\, after the death of her husband\, served God in a state of continency and employed herself wholly in prayer\, fasting\, and works of charity. By the public and edifying example of this lady and her whole family many idolaters were moved to renounce the worship of their false gods\, and to embrace the Faith of Christ. \nThis excited the anger of the heathen priests\, who complained to the emperor that the boldness with which Felicitas publicly practised the Christian religion drew many from the worship of the immortal gods\, who were the guardians and protectors of the empire\, and that\, in order to appease these false gods\, it was necessary to compel this lady and her children to sacrifice to them. \nPublius\, the prefect of Rome\, caused the mother and her sons to be apprehended and brought before him\, and\, addressing her\, said\, “Take pity on your children\, Felicitas; they are in the bloom of youth\, and may aspire to the greatest honors and preferments.” The holy mother answered\, “Your pity is really impiety\, and the compassion to which you exhort me would make me the most cruel of mothers.” Then turning herself towards her children\, she said to them\, “My sons\, look up to heaven\, where Jesus Christ with his Saints expects you. Be faithful in his love\, and fight courageously for your souls.” \nPublius\, being exasperated at this behavior\, commanded her to be cruelly buffeted; he then called the children to him one after another\, and used many artful speeches\, mingling promises with threats to induce them to adore the gods. His arguments and threats were equally in vain\, and the brothers were condemned to be scourged. After being whipped\, they were remanded to prison\, and the prefect\, despairing to overcome their resolution\, laid the whole process before the emperor. Antoninus gave an order that they should be sent to different judges\, and be condemned to different deaths. \nJanuarius was scourged to death with whips loaded with plummets of lead. The two next\, Felix and Philip\, were beaten with clubs till they expired. Sylvanus\, the fourth\, was thrown headlong down a steep precipice. The three youngest\, Alexander\, Vitalis\, and Martialis\, were beheaded\, and the same sentence was executed upon the mother four months after. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:CLOSING PILGRIMAGE SEASON 2017
DESCRIPTION:The Immaculate Conception Parish or the Antipolo Cathedral is closing its Pilgrimage Season 2017 on Tuesday\, July 4.  \nOn May 2\, 2017\, the “Pilgrimage Season” was opened with a holy mass held at the Pinagmisahan Hill. In his homily\, Antipolo Bishop Francis De Leon says\, “Kaya po tayo narito sapagkat inaalala natin ang tanda na ibinigay noong matagal nang panahon (We are gathered here today to remember the sign that was given to us years ago).” \nBishop Francis pertains to a centuries-old story about a plague that killed hundreds of men and women in the towns of Antipolo\, Taytay\, and Cainta. During that time\, the parish priest of Antipolo wanted to lead a holy mass on top of the hill where the three towns can be viewed. He hoped that this Eucharistic Celebration could finally end the plague\, to which it did happen. Thus\, it is now called the “Pinagmisahan Hill.” \nIn addition\, Bishop Francis said that this yearly tradition is a sign of gratitude to God with the intercession of Mary\, Patroness of Antipolo\, for the gift of healing as a sign of His love to his children. \nFrom the opening\, a lot of activities were held\, such as Novena Masses\, pilgrimage to a number of churches\, visitation of the Image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage to different places\, and historical processions. \n  \nCLOSING CELEBRATION \nAs part of the closing of the “Pilgrimage Season 2017\,” a re-enactment of the Canonical Coronation of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage will be held on July 4\, 2017. Although\, It has been cleared that the original date of her Canonical Coronation was on November 28\, 1926. \nMoreover\, both canonically crowned images of the Nuestra Señora De Aranzazu (Our Lady of Aranzazu) from San Mateo\, Rizal and the Nuestra Señora de Los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Abandoned) from Marikina City\, are also coming over for the celebration. \nMost. SUMMARY:MEMORIAL: FIRST MARTYRS OF THE CHURCH OF ROME
DESCRIPTION:First Martyrs of the Church of Rome\nThere were Christians in Rome within a dozen or so years after the death of Jesus\, though they were not the converts of the “Apostle of the Gentiles” (see Romans 15:20). Paul had not yet visited them at the time he wrote his great letter in A.D. 57-58. \nThere was a large Jewish population in Rome. Probably as a result of controversy between Jews and Jewish Christians\, the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome in A.D. 49-50. Suetonius the historian says that the expulsion was due to disturbances in the city “caused by the certain Chrestus” [Christ]. Perhaps many came back after Claudius’s death in A.D. 54. Paul’s letter was addressed to a church with members from Jewish and gentile backgrounds. \nIn July of A.D. 64\, more than half of Rome was destroyed by fire. Rumor blamed the tragedy on Nero\, who wanted to enlarge his palace. He shifted the blame by accusing the Christians. According to the historian Tacitus\, a “great multitude” of Christians were put to death because of their “hatred of the human race.” Peter and Paul were probably among the victims. \nThreatened by an army revolt and condemned to death by the senate\, Nero committed suicide in A.D. 68 at the age of thirty-one. \nWherever the Good News of Jesus was preached\, it met the same opposition as Jesus did\, and many of those who began to follow him shared his suffering and death. But no human force could stop the power of the Spirit unleashed upon the world. The blood of martyrs has always been\, and will always be\, the seed of Christians. \nSymbols: Red is the color for marytrs; red rose symbol of martyrdom; crown\, symbolizing victory over death and sin; white horse with a white banner and cross and sword; fire or flames; palm\, symbol of victory. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:SOLEMNITY: Sts PETER & PAUL\, APOSTLES
DESCRIPTION:St. Peter\nPeter’s original name was Simon. Christ Himself gave him the name Cephas or Peter when they first met and later confirmed it. This name change was meant to show both Peter’s rank as leader of the apostles and the outstanding trait of his character — Peter (in Hebrew Kephas) the Rock. Peter was born in Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. Like his younger brother Andrew\, he was a fisherman and dwelt at Capernaum. Peter’s house often became the scene of miracles\, since the Master would stay there whenever He was teaching in that locality. Together with his brothers John and Andrew\, Peter belonged to the first of Jesus’ disciples (John 1:40-50). \nAfter the ascension\, Peter always took the leading role\, exercising the office of chief shepherd that Christ had entrusted to him. He delivered the first sermon on Pentecost and received the first Gentiles into the Church (Cornelius; Acts 10:1). Paul went to Jerusalem “to see Peter.” After his miraculous deliverance from prison (Easter\, 42 A.D.)\, Peter “went to a different place\,” most probably to Rome. Details now become scanty; we hear of his presence at the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15:1)\, and of his journey to Antioch (Gal. 2:11). \nIt is certain that Peter labored in Rome as an apostle\, that he was the city’s first bishop\, and that he died there as a martyr\, bound to a cross (67 A.D.). According to tradition he also was the first bishop of Antioch. He is the author of two letters\, the first Christian encyclicals. His burial place is Christendom’s most famous shrine\, an edifice around whose dome are inscribed the words: Tu es Petrus\, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam. \nPatron: Against frenzy; bakers; bridge builders; butchers; clock makers; cobblers; Exeter College Oxford; feet problems; fever; fishermen; harvesters; locksmiths; longevity; masons; net makers; papacy; Popes; ship builders; shipwrights; shoemakers; stone masons; Universal Church; watch makers; Poznan\, Poland; Rome; Diocese of Jackson\, Mississippi; Diocese of Las Vegas\, Nevada; Diocese of Marquette\, Michigan; Archdiocese of Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Diocese of Providence\, Rhode Island; Diocese of Scranton\, Pennsylvania. \nSymbols: Two keys saltire; pastoral staff and two large keys; inverted cross; inverted cross and two keys saltire; crowing cock; fish; two swords; patriarchal cross and two keys saltire; two keys and a scroll; sword.\nOften portrayed as: Bald man\, often with a fringe of hair on the sides and a tuft on top; book; keys; man crucified head downwards; man holding a key or keys; man robed as a pope and bearing keys and a double-barred cross. \n___________________________________________ \nSt. Paul\nPaul\, known as Saul (his Roman name) before his conversion\, was born at Tarsus in the Roman province of Silicia about two or three years after the advent of the Redeemer. He was the son of Jewish parents who belonged to the tribe of Benjamin\, was reared according to the strict religious-nationalistic party of the Pharisees\, and enjoyed the high distinction of Roman citizenship. \nAfter receiving baptism and making some initial attempts at preaching\, Paul withdrew into the Arabian desert (c. 34-37 A.D.)\, where he prepared himself for his future mission. During this retreat he was favored with special revelations\, Christ appearing to him personally. Upon his return to Damascus he began to preach but was forced to leave when the Jews sought to kill him. Then he went to Jerusalem “to see Peter.” Barnabas introduced him to the Christian community\, but the hatred of the Jews again obliged him to take secret flight. The following years (38-42 A.D.) he spent at Tarsus until Barnabas brought him to the newly founded Christian community at Antioch\, where both worked a year for the cause of Christ; in the year 44 he made another journey to Jerusalem with the money collected for that famine stricken community. \nThe first major missionary journey (45-48) began upon his return as he and Barnabas brought the Gospel to Cyprus and Asia Minor (Acts 13-14). The Council of Jerusalem occasioned Paul’s reappearance in Jerusalem (50). Spurred on by the decisions of the Council\, he began the second missionary journey (51-53)\, traveling through Asia Minor and then crossing over to Europe and founding churches at Philippi\, Thessalonia (his favorite)\, Berea\, Athens\, Corinth. He remained almost two years at Corinth\, establishing a very flourishing and important community. In 54 he returned to Jerusalem for the fourth time. \nPaul’s third missionary journey (54-58) took him to Ephesus\, where he labored three years with good success; after visiting his European communities\, he returned to Jerusalem for a fifth time (Pentecost\, 58). There he was seized by the Jews and accused of condemning the Law. After being held as a prisoner for two years at Caesarea\, he appealed to Caesar and was sent by sea to Rome (60 A.D.). Shipwrecked and delayed on the island of Malta\, he arrived at Rome in the spring of 61 and passed the next two years in easy confinement before being released. The last years of the saint’s life were devoted to missionary excursions\, probably including Spain\, and to revisiting his first foundations. In 66 he returned to Rome\, was taken prisoner\, and beheaded a year later. His fourteen letters are a precious legacy; they afford a deep insight into a great soul. \nPatron: Against snakes; authors; Cursillo movement; evangelists; hailstorms; hospital public relations; journalists; lay people; missionary bishops; musicians; poisonous snakes; public relations personnel; public relations work; publishers; reporters; rope braiders; rope makers; saddlemakers; saddlers; snake bites; tent makers; writers; Malta; Rome; Poznan\, Poland; newspaper editorial staff\, Archdiocese of Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Diocese of Covington\, Kentucky; Diocese of Birmingham\, Alabama; Diocese of Las Vegas\, Nevada; Diocese of Providence\, Rhode Island; Diocese of Worcester\, Massachusetts. \nSymbols: Book and sword\, three fountains; two swords; scourge; serpent and a fire; armour of God; twelve scrolls with names of his Epistles; Phoenix; palm tree; shield of faith; sword; book.\nOften portrayed as: Thin-faced elderly man with a high forehead\, receding hairline and long pointed beard; man holding a sword and a book; man with 3 springs of water nearby; \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:FEAST: ST. IRENAEUS
DESCRIPTION:St. Irenaeus\nSaint Irenaeus was born in the year 120; he was of the Greek tongue\, and probably a native of Asia Minor. His parents\, who were Christians\, placed him while still young under the care of the great Saint Polycarp\, Bishop of Smyrna. It was in this holy school that he learned the sacred science which later made him a great ornament of the Church and the terror of her enemies. Saint Polycarp cultivated his rising genius and formed his mind to piety by his precepts and example\, and the zealous young scholar was careful to reap all advantages offered him by the solicitude of such a master. Such was his veneration for his tutor’s sanctity that he observed all the acts and virtues he saw in that holy man\, the better to copy his example and learn his spirit. He listened to his instructions with an insatiable ardor\, and so deeply did he engrave them in his heart that the impressions remained vivid even in his old age. In order to confound the heresies of his age\, this Doctor of the Church acquainted himself with the conceits of the pagan philosophers\, and thereby became qualified to trace every error to its sources and set it in its full light. By his writings he was already known to Tertullian\, Theodoret and Saint Epiphanus\, who speak of him as a luminous torch of truth in the darkness of those times. \nAfter Irenaeus had spent a number of years in combat against the eastern gnostics and philosophers of error\, Saint Polycarp determined to send him to Gaul\, where many of the heretics of Asia Minor had already migrated to pursue the Catholic religion\, which was beginning to find roots there. With a company of about forty Christians\, the valiant soldier of Christ ascended the Rhone to Lyons to rejoin and aid Saint Pothinus\, its bishop. Saint Pothinus was already advanced in age\, and his church’s neophytes could not always distinguish truth from the gnostic aberrations. Saint Pothinus received the apostles with joy and soon ordained Saint Irenaeus. \nA hundred times he exposed himself to martyrdom by his zeal\, acting as the right arm of the aging bishop\, but God was reserving that crown for him twenty-five years later. When Saint Pothinus had glorified God by his splendid martyr’s death in the year 177\, Ireneus was chosen to be the second bishop of Lyons. The persecutors imagined that Christianity had been stifled in Lyons\, and they ceased their pursuits for a time. \nThis great Doctor of the Church wrote many important works\, of which the most famous is his Adversus Haereses\, Against the Heresies\, in explanation of the Faith. By his preaching\, Saint Irenaeus in a short time converted almost the whole country to the Faith; the Christians of Lyons became models by their candor\, their estrangement from all ambition\, their poverty\, chastity and temperance\, and in this way confounded many adversaries of their religion. Saint Irenaeus continued to imitate what he had seen done by his beloved master\, Saint Polycarp\, himself the disciple and imitator of Saint John the Apostle. One can readily imagine the excellence of the administration and the breadth of charity reigning in the Church of Lyons. \nFinally he suffered martyrdom there\, with many others\, in the year 202\, under the Emperor Septimus Severus\, after eighty years spent in the service of the Lord. The imperial decrees renewing the persecutions arrived at Lyons at the time of the celebration of Severus’ tenth year of reign; the pagans found amid the celebrations an opportunity to take vengeance on the Christians\, who refused to participate in the debaucheries which accompanied these feastings. Assassins armed with daggers\, stones and knives filled the city with blood\, and thousands of Christians won\, with their bishop\, the crown they had always admired as the greatest glory God could grant His servants. \nExcerpted from Little Pictorial Lives of the Saints\, a compilation based on Butler’s Lives of the Saints\, and other sources by John Gilmary Shea (Benziger Brothers: New York\, 1894); Les Petits Bollandistes: Vies des Saints\, by Msgr. Paul Guérin (Bloud et Barral: Paris\, 1882)\, Vol. 7. \nPatron: Archdiocese of Mobile\, Alabama. \nSymbols: Lighted torch; book. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
DESCRIPTION:Our Lady of Perpetual Help\nAlso known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour\, is celebrated on June 27 by the universal Church. \nThe devotion to this Marian advocation revolves around the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour\, painted on wood\, with background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel presenting Him the instruments of His Passion. Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which form the abbreviated words Mother of God\, Jesus Christ\, Archangel Michael\, and Archangel Gabriel respectively. \nThe icon was brought to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant\, who\, dying there\, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration. It was exposed in the church of San Matteo in the famous Roman street of Via Merulana\, which connects the basilicas of Saint Mary Major and Saint John Lateran. Crowds flocked to this church\, and for nearly three hundred years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. The picture was then popularly called the Madonna di San Matteo. The church was served for a time by the Hermits of Saint Augustine. \nThese Augustinians were still in charge when the French invaded Rome (1812) and destroyed the church. The picture disappeared; it remained hidden and neglected for over forty years\, but a series of providential circumstances between 1863 and 1865 led to its rediscovery in an oratory of the Augustinian Fathers at Santa Maria in Posterula. \nPope Pius IX\, who as a boy had prayed before the picture in San Matteo\, became interested in the discovery. But at that time\, the ruins of San Matteo were in the grounds of a convent of the Redemptorists — the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer — founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787). \nThe Father General of the Redemptorists\, Most Rev. Nicholas Mauron\, decided to bring the whole matter to the attention of the Pope. The Pope listened attentively and felt sure it was God’s will that the icon should be gain exposed to public veneration and the logical site was their church of St. Alphonsus\, standing as it did between the Basilicas of St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. The Holy Father at once took a piece of paper and wrote a short memorandum ordering the Augustinian Fathers of St. Mary in Posterula to surrender the picture to the Redemptorists\, on condition that the Redemptorists supply the Augustinians with another picture of Our Lady or a good copy of the icon of Perpetual Help. \nThe Icon meant much to the Augustinians\, but when the two Redemptorists came armed with the Pope’s signed memorandum\, what could they do but obey? On January 19\, 1866\, Fathers Marchi and Bresciani brought the miraculous picture to St. Alphonsus’ church. Preparations were now made to inaugurate the new public reign of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. On April 26th\, a great procession was staged in which the picture was carried throughout the Esquiline region of Rome. Upon returning to the church\, the picture was enthroned over the high altar\, in a resplendent shrine-niche especially constructed for it. \nThe report of marvelous healings spread rapidly throughout the city of Rome and people came by the hundreds to visit the shrine. Soon the whole area around the altar was filled with abandoned crutches and canes and several whole glass-covered cabinets were filled with gold and silver thanksgiving offerings in the shapes of miniature hearts\, arms\, legs and other votive offerings. Scarcely two weeks after the solemn exposition of the picture\, Pope Pius IX himself came to visit the shrine. He stood quietly before it for a long time and then exclaimed: “How beautiful she is!”. \nPope Leo XIII\, the next pontiff\, had a copy of the picture on his desk so that he might see it constantly during his working day. St. Pius X sent a copy of the icon to the Empress of Ethiopia and granted an indulgence of 100 days to anyone who repeated the phrase: “Mother of Perpetual Help\, pray for us.” \nPope Benedict XV had the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help placed immediately over his chair of state in the throne room. Here it could be seen by all just over his head\, as if to say: “Here is your true Queen!”. \nPope Pius IX told the Redemptorists\, in speaking to them of the treasure he had committed to their care: “Make her known!” It seems as though they hardly needed the exhortation. In the United States\, they built the first Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in the Roxbury section of Boston\, and it was eventually raised to the honor of a “Papal Basilica” by Pope Pius XII. \nSymbolism of the icon of Perpetual Help \nThe influence of Eastern icons in the West\, around the XII and XIII centuries brought a class of icons called Cardiotissa\, from the Greek word kardia\, meaning heart. Cardiotissa means “having a heart” or showing sympathy and mercy and compassion. In them the face of Our Lady appears full of sorrow\, yet supremely dignified in her contemplation of the sufferings of her Son. His passion is represented by angels holding instruments of His passion\, most often the cross\, the lance\, the sponge\, and the nails. \nThe Our Mother of Perpetual Help icon is of this type. The angels holding the instruments of the Passion have their hands covered with a protecting veil as a sign of reverence in handling sacred objects. \nThe Child Jesus is shown with an adult face and a high brow\, indicating His divine Mind of infinite intelligence. As God\, He knew that the angelic apparition was prophetic of His future passion. Yet in His human nature as a small child\, He is frightened and runs to His Mother for protection. Our Lady hastily picks Him up and clasps Him to her bosom. This action is indicated by the fact that the Lord’s right foot is nervously curled about the left ankle and in such haste that His right sandal has become loosened and hangs by a single strap. Further action is indicated by the way the Child Jesus clasps His Mother’s right hand with both of His\, holding tightly to Our Lady’s thumb. \nOur Lady is clothed in a dress of dark red which was long reserved in the Byzantine world for the Empress alone\, indicating the Queenship of Mary. \nSome commentators on color claim that bluish purple became the color of penance in the Western Church (during Lent and Advent) because purple is a combination of blue and red. The blue reminds us of heaven\, to which we wish to arrive by our penance\, and the red recalls martyrdom\, because all penance requires a dying to oneself\, especially mortifying inordinate desire for food and pleasure. The archangels Gabriel and Michael were tunics of purple since they carry the instruments of the passion and death of Christ. The figures of the icon are identified with abbreviations of their names and Mary is designated by her chief title to glory: Mother of God. \nOur Lady’s face is of unspeakable majesty and calm and yet her large eyes\, partly closed\, express ineffable sorrow and sympathy. Our Lady is not looking at Jesus\, but rather to us\, to express compassion for us in our fears and sorrows. \nExcerpted from Catholic News Agency \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:FEAST: ST CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA
DESCRIPTION:St. Cyril of Alexandria\nSt. Cyril is one of the great Greek Fathers of the Church. He was chosen by Divine Providence to be the shield and champion of the Church against Nestorius\, who denied the unity of persons in Christ. If this heresy had succeeded\, Mary would not be called the Mother of God. \nExcepting Sts. Athanasius and Augustine\, his equal as a defender of orthodoxy can hardly be found in the Church’s history. His greatest achievement was the successful direction of the ecumenical council at Ephesus (431)\, of which he was the soul (Pope Celestine had appointed him papal legate). In this council two important dogmas were defined—that there is but one person in Christ\, and that Mary (in the literal sense of the word) can be called the Mother of God (Theotokos). His successful defense of the latter doctrine is his greatest title to honor. \nHis writings show such depth and clarity that the Greeks called him the “seal of the fathers.” He died in 444 A.D.\, after having been bishop for thirty-two years. In Rome\, the basilica of St. Mary Major stands as a most venerable monument to the honor paid Mary at the Council of Ephesus. On the arch leading into the sanctuary important incidents in the lives of Jesus and Mary are depicted in mosaic. \nIn 1881\, he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII\, and in 1944\, on the fifteenth centenary of Cyril’s death\, Pope Pius XII issued his encyclical Orientalis Ecclesiae\, commemorating Cyril’s place in the history of the Church. \nPatron: Alexandria; Egypt. \nSymbols: Shown holding a pen; with the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:SOLEMNITY OF THE BIRTH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
DESCRIPTION:Saint John the Baptist’s Story\nJesus called John the greatest of all those who had preceded him: “I tell you\, among those born of women\, no one is greater than John….” But John would have agreed completely with what Jesus added: “[Y]et the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he” (Luke 7:28). \nJohn spent his time in the desert\, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom\, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His baptism\, he said\, was for repentance. But one would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie his sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30). \nJohn was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. “I need to be baptized by you” (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted\, “Allow it now\, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus\, true and humble human as well as eternal God\, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. John thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. But making himself part of that community\, he made it truly messianic. \nThe greatness of John\, his pivotal place in the history of salvation\, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself—both made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan\, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus\, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. \nPerhaps John’s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason\, when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus’ answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering\, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:SOLEMNITY OF MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS
DESCRIPTION:HISTORY OF THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART\nThe first feast of the Sacred Heart was celebrated on August 31\, 1670\, in Rennes\, France\, through the efforts of Fr. Jean Eudes (1602-1680). From Rennes\, the devotion spread\, but it took the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) for the devotion to become universal. \nIn all of these visions\, in which Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary\, the Sacred Heart of Jesus played a central role. The “great apparition\,” which took place on June 16\, 1675\, during the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi\, is the source of the modern Feast of the Sacred Heart. In that vision\, Christ asked St. Margaret Mary to request that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated on the Friday after the octave (or eighth day) of the Feast of Corpus Christi\, in reparation for the ingratitude of men for the sacrifice that Christ had made for them. \n The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but His love for all mankind.\nThe devotion became quite popular after St. Margaret Mary’s death in 1690\, but\, because the Church initially had doubts about the validity of St. Margaret Mary’s visions\, it wasn’t until 1765 that the feast was celebrated officially in France. \nAlmost 100 years later\, in 1856\, Pope Pius IX\, at the request of the French bishops\, extended the feast to the universal Church. It is celebrated on the day requested by our Lord-the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi\, or 19 days after Pentecost Sunday. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:St. Romuald\, Abbot
DESCRIPTION:Born at Ravenna\, probably about 950; died at Val-di-Castro\, 19 June\, 1027. St. Peter Damian\, his first biographer\, and almost all the Camaldolese writers assert that St. Romuald’s age at his death was one hundred and twenty\, and that therefore he was born about 907. This is disputed by most modern writers. Such a date not only results in a series of improbabilities with regard to events in the saint’s life\, but is also irreconcilable with known dates\, and probably was determined from some mistaken inference by St. Peter Damian. \nIn his youth Romuald indulged in the usual thoughtless and even vicious life of the tenth-century noble\, yet felt greatly drawn to the eremetical life. At the age of twenty\, struck with horror because his father had killed an enemy in a duel\, he fled to the Abbey of San Apollinare-in-Classe and after some hesitation entered religion. San Apollinare had recently been reformed by St. Maieul of Cluny\, but still was not strict enough in its observance to satisfy Romuald. His injudicious correction of the less zealous aroused such enmity against him that he applied for\, and was readily granted\, permission to retire to Venice\, where he placed himself under the direction of a hermit named Marinus and lived a life of extraordinary severity. About 978\, Pietro Orseolo I\, Doge of Venice\, who had obtained his office by acquiescence in the murder of his predecessor\, began to suffer remorse for his crime. On the advice of Guarinus\, Abbot of San Miguel-de-Cuxa\, in Catalonia\, and of Marinus and Romuald\, he abandoned his office and relations\, and fled to Cuxa\, where he took the habit of St. Benedict\, while Romuald and Marinus erected a hermitage close to the monastery. \nFor five years the saintlived a life of great austerity\, gathering round him a band of disciples. Then\, hearing that his father\, Sergius\, who had become a monk\, was tormented with doubts as to his vocation\, he returned in haste to Italy\, subjected Sergius to severe discipline\, and so resolved his doubts. For the next thirty years St. Romuald seems to have wandered about Italy\, founding many monasteries and hermitages. For some time he made Pereum his favourite resting place. In 1005 he went to Val-di- Castro for about two years\, and left it\, prophesying that he would return to die there alone and unaided. Again he wandered about Italy; then attempted to go to Hungary\, but was prevented by persistent illness. In 1012 he appeared at Vallombrosa\, whence he moved into the Diocese of Arezzo. Here\, according to the legend\, a certain Maldolus\, who had seen a vision of monks in white garments ascending into Heaven\, gave him some land\, afterwards known as the Campus Maldoli\, or Camaldoli. St. Romuald built on this land five cells for hermits\, which\, with the monastery at Fontebuono\, built two years later\, became the famous mother-house of the Camaldolese Order. \nIn 1013 he retired to Monte-Sitria. In 1021 he went to Bifolco. Five years later he returned to Val-di-Castrowhere he died\, as he had prophesied\, alone in his cell. Many miracles were wrought at his tomb\, over which an altarwas allowed to be erected in 1032. In 1466 his body was found still incorrupt; it was translated to Fabriano in 1481. In 1595 Clement VIII fixed his feast on 7 Feb.\, the day of the translation of his relics\, and extended its celebration to the whole Church. He is represented in art pointing to a ladder on which are monks ascending to Heaven. \n[Note: By the Apostolic Constitution Calendarium Romanum\, promulgated in 1969\, the feast of St. Romuald was assigned\, as an “Optional Memorial\,” to 19 June\, the day of his death.] \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr

SUMMARY:World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought
DESCRIPTION:Desertification is the degradation of land in arid\, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations. Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dryland ecosystems\, which cover over one third of the world‘s land area\, are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty\, political instability\, deforestation\, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices can all undermine the productivity of the land. \nOver 250 million people are directly affected by desertification\, and about one billion people in over one hundred countries are at risk. These people include many of the world‘s poorest\, most marginalized and politically weak citizens. \nThe World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \n“Land degradation and migration”\nThis year the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought examine the important link between land degradation and migration. Among others\, environmental degradation\, food insecurity and poverty are causes of migration and development challenges. \nIn just 15 years\, the number of international migrants worldwide has risen from 173 million in 2000 to 244 million in 2015. \nThis year’s celebration looks at specific ways local communities can build resilience against current multi-fold development challenges through sustainable land management practices. This day should remind everyone of land’s important role in producing food and generating local employment\, as well as its ability to add to the sustainability\, stability and security of desertification-affected places. Ouagadougou\, the capital of Burkina Faso\, hosts the global observance of 2017\, organized by the Ministry of Environment\, Green Economy and Climate Change. \nDesertification and the Sustainable Development Goals\nThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development declares that “we are determined to protect the planet from degradation\, including through sustainable consumption and production\, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change\, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations”. Specifically\, Goal 15 states our resolve to halt and reverse land degradation. \nSpread Good NewsTweet\n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n MoreShare on Tumblr
