“And a sword will pierce your own soul, so that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed,” this is a passage from Luke 2:35 referring to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in which its feast is being celebrated today. Devotions to Mary’s heart are essentially bridged towards the genuine love of her heart for Christ. Many are familiar to the image but are they really devoted enough to know its deeper heart symbolism? Since it is the feast day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary it is but fitting to unveil the complexity of the different symbols that composes the image.
If given much focus, the image of Mary’s heart is actually a collection of symbols which is composed of a heart, sword, fire, white roses and rays of light seamlessly integrates to representing her impeccable love for her son Jesus Christ. But the question is what does each of them stand for?
First, are the rays of light that encompasses the heart of Mary. This symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary as “a woman clothed in the sun,” referring to the verse from Revelation 12:1 that labels Mary the Mother of our God as the Supernal Sun that radiates two qualities which are warmth and light.
Second of these symbols are the white roses. This depicts Mary’s purity and virginity. Mary’s purity was actually brought about by her Immaculate Conception that created her most pure heart. Mary’s immaculate heart is also pictured as blazing on fire which then emphasizes that her heart burns only with love for humanity and the Lord.
The second to the last is the sword that is pierced through her heart which is related to the aforementioned biblical verse from Luke that greatly symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary’s sorrows and pain on witnessing the sufferings and crucifixion of her own son, Jesus Christ.
The last symbol and the most important of all, is definitely the heart that is visible outside her body, which represents Mary’s undying maternal love such that she cannot contain from within not only for Christ but for all humanity.
Devotions are not solitarily done by deeds alone, but also by knowing to prevent blind following. The observance of honoring the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a form of reminder that it is the perfect model on expressing one’s love for Christ thus it is reasonable that all of us must work hard to have a heart like Mary, a heart which duly inhibits H-Humility, E-Empathy, A-Acceptance, R-Resiliency and T-Truthfulness.
