SAN MATEO, Rizal – San Mateans proved that San Mateo is the home of Kakanin and malagkit as Unang Hirit celebrates 20th Kakanin Festival with the townspeople.

Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu was carried and praised by devotees while the Pamimintuho sa Birhen ng Aranzazu is being played. Different barangays also proudly paraded the different variants of Kakanin and malagkit such as Bibingka, Kalamay, Ube, Suman, Maja Blanca, Pitchi-pitchi, Puto’t kutsina, Palitaw and Sapin-sapin.

On the second segment of the program, Mylene Tolentino demonstrated the steps on how to prepare a Sapin-sapin which the hosts tried right after.

UH hosts Boobay and Juancho also initiated a game inspired by the stop dance but used the bilaos instead of news papers.

Kakanin Festival is celebrated in San Mateo every 9th of September in honor of Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu. Aside from flowers, the people of San Mateo also offer kakanin to Our Lady of Aranzazu.
