On Thursday, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula as the 33rd archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila. He succeeded Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle who is now the Prefect of Congregation for Evangelization of People in Rome, Italy.
Cardinal Advincula was born on March 30, 1952 in Dumalag, Capiz. He was ordained as a priest on April 14, 1976 and he was appointed as the spiritual director, professor and dean at St. Pius X Seminary. After a year, he studied Psychology in De La Salle University. He also studied Canon Law in University of Santo Thomas and in Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas-Angelicum in Rome, Italy.
In 1995, he became the rector of St. Pius X Seminary in Capiz. In 2001, Saint Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Bishop of San Carlos. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI assigned him as the Archbishop of Capiz. And in November 28, 2020, Pope Francis named him Cardinal.
Cardinal Advincula became the ninth (9th) Cardinal from the Philippines.
