ZAMBOANGA City \u2013 In a time of religious intolerance in various parts of the globe, the National Youth Day 2017 hosted by the Archdiocese of Zamboanga City set an example of unity amid religious and cultural diversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though we have different religion[s], we can work together and have unity,\u201d said Rania Josheen Taguranaw, a Muslim volunteer in the NYD registration team.<\/p>\n

The NYD, which required multi-sectoral cooperation and coordination to organize, encouraged non-Catholics\u00a0to volunteer for the event.<\/p>\n

Everyone is welcome<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean that if it\u2019s a Catholic event, only Catholics can come. Like in this NYD, everyone was welcome,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Dexter Trinida, another Muslim volunteer, this time with the NYD health and emergency team, expressed his hopes on putting an end to religious intolerance and discrimination.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026If we really want to correct the wrongful notions of society toward inter-religious peace, we ourselves should be the one to take the step,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018NYD Effect\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aside from welcoming non-Catholic volunteers, NYD 2017 encouraged having foster families and speakers from various faiths.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only [did we have] foster parents who were non Catholics, there were also some Muslim facilitators,\u201d observed Bryan Tolentino, a delegate from the Diocese of Cubao.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this we see that even though we have different beliefs, we can attain unity in diversity\u2026 And that communion with them is very powerful, once we make a stand and work together,\u201d added the pilgrim.

\nBoth Trinida and Taguranaw, further expressed their belief in the \u201charmony [among] religions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn what I saw, even though you are from a different religion, it\u2019s okay to interact with each other,\u201d said Taguranaw.
\nFor Trinidad, the youth event showed that \u201cchaos cannot overpower the unity of the people.\u201d CBCPNews<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
