If God alone is to be adored, if Christ alone is to be worshiped as our Mediator of Redemption, may any honor be shown to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and, if so, what kind of honor?<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Main News Article \/ Blog \/ Content” _builder_version=”3.29.3″ hover_enabled=”0″ _i=”2″ _address=”0.0.0.2″] A Marian devotion<\/b> in Christianity is a gift (total or partial) of oneself, or one’s activities to the Virgin Mary, i.e. a willingness and desire to dedicate oneself to, or venerate her, either in\u00a0 terms\u00a0 of\u00a0 prayers\u00a0 or\u00a0 in\u00a0 terms\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 set\u00a0 of\u00a0 pious acts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Such\u00a0 prayers\u00a0 or\u00a0 acts\u00a0 may\u00a0 be accompanied by specific requests for Mary’s intercession to God.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Devotion\u00a0 to\u00a0 the Virgin Mary does not, however, amount to worship – which is reserved for\u00a0\u00a0 God;\u00a0 e.g.\u00a0\u00a0 both\u00a0 Catholics\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 Eastern\u00a0 Orthodox\u00a0 view\u00a0 Mary\u00a0 as\u00a0 subordinate\u00a0 to Christ, but uniquely so, in that she is seen as above all other creatures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Marian\u00a0 devotions\u00a0 are\u00a0 important\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 Roman Catholic but most Protestant views on Mary do not accept them,\u00a0 because such devotions are not recorded or promoted in the Bible. They\u00a0 believe this devotion may distract attention from Christ.\u00a0 There is\u00a0 significant diversity of\u00a0 form\u00a0 and\u00a0 structure\u00a0 in\u00a0 Marian\u00a0 devotions\u00a0 practiced\u00a0 by\u00a0 different\u00a0 groups of\u00a0 Christians.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n At the top level Catholic Marian devotions may be categorized into the following non-exclusive groups, based on the characteristics of the devotion:<\/p>\n 1. Apparition-based<\/i>: These include well-known and formally-approved Marian apparitions such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima or Our Lady of Akita, and a multitude of regional\u00a0 devotions\u00a0 across\u00a0 the\u00a0 continents.\u00a0\u00a0 Such\u00a0 devotions\u00a0 have\u00a0 usually\u00a0 resulted\u00a0 in\u00a0 the construction of major Marian churches.<\/p>\n <\/i>2. Doctrine-based<\/i>: These include the defined doctrines of Mary as Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, Mary conceived without sin, Mary assumed into heaven. The devotions may precede the dogmatic definition\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 doctrine. Such\u00a0 devotions can evolve over time, e.g. to the joint devotion to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary.<\/p>\n 3. Life of Mary<\/i>: Specific episodes in the Life of the Virgin Mary have resulted in devotions that focus on that aspect of her life. Examples include the Seven Sorrows of Mary that recall her sufferings from the Prophecy of Simeon to the Crucifixion of Jesus. The\u00a0 Seven\u00a0 Joys of Mary on the other hand start with the\u00a0 Annunciation and end with her coronation in Heaven.<\/p>\n 4. Sacramental<\/i>: The Rosary\u00a0 and\u00a0 Rosary\u00a0 meditations\u00a0 continue to be key Marian devotions. Over\u00a0 the\u00a0 centuries, among\u00a0 other\u00a0 sacramental\u00a0\u00a0 various devotional scapulars, especially the Brown scapular became very popular among Catholics.<\/p>\n 5.
